Coronel Oviedo is not a destination chosen for its own sake, but a transit point that almost every traveler crossing Eastern Paraguay ends up passing through. Founded in 1758 under the name Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Ajos around the trade of black tobacco exported to Spain, it took its current name in 1931 in honor of Colonel Florentín Oviedo, a hero of the Triple Alliance War. Its position at the intersection of routes PY02, PY07 and PY08, connecting east-west and north-south across the entire eastern region, makes it today a first-rate commercial and logistics hub, capital of the Caaguazú department.
From tobacco farming to military memory
The city was founded in 1758 by the Spaniard Jaime Sanjust under the name Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Ajos. The cultivation and export of black tobacco to Spain was then the main driver of this foundation, intended to consolidate Spanish colonization toward the north of the territory. In 1931, under the presidency of José Patricio Guggiari, the government decreed the name change of the city to Coronel Oviedo, in honor of Colonel Florentín Oviedo, a hero of the Triple Alliance War.
The great crossroads of the eastern region
The city lies at the center of the eastern region of Paraguay, at the intersection of routes 2, 7 and 8. Route PY02 connects the country from east to west, while PY08 crosses it from north to south: Coronel Oviedo is thus the point where the two busiest road axes of the country cross, connecting all cardinal points to one another. This position naturally makes it a first-rate commercial center for the entire region.
